Lucorice
Licorice
Glycyrrhiza glabra

Distribution: Native to South Europe and Asia Minor, and is cultivated in many countries, including Poland.
Material: peeled root of licorice runners.
The main active ingredients: a series of triterpene saponins (among others. Glycyrrhizin occurs in the form of potassium, calcium or ammonium glycyrrhizinic acid), flavonoids (eg likwirytygenina, izolikwirytygenina and their glycosides), hydroksykumaryny, phytosterols (eg. Beta-sitosterol) , carbohydrates, amino acids, betaine, choline, resins and mineral salts.
Action: For many years, licorice is one of the most widely used plants in herbal medicine. Are especially appreciated its anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic, but it is also a very good means of expectorant (stimulates the secretory function of the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract and facilitates the movement of cilia in the trachea and bronchi). The study also confirmed its effectiveness in the case of gastric and duodenal ulcers. Liquorice components provide for a natural defense against aggressive factors contained in the gastric juice (hydrochloric acid and pepsin) and assist in the regeneration of already damaged walls, for example, stimulate the production of protective mucus, increased blood flow through the lining of the gastrointestinal tract and inhibit excessive vascular permeability, reducing thus inflammation. It should also be remembered for her slight estrogenic activity, beneficial effects on the nervous system as well as a variety of defenses.
Contraindications: pregnancy and lactation, liver disease combined with cholestasis, liver cirrhosis, severe renal failure, hypertension, low levels of potassium in the blood.
Note: Avoid the use of high doses of licorice (5-15 g raw material, which corresponds to 200-600 mg glycyrrhizin) for more than 4-six weeks, as this can lead to a dangerously low level of potassium and sodium and water retention in the body. As a result, there may be swelling and problems with the cardiovascular system (eg, high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm). Therefore, more preferred is the use of formulations that are devoid of glycyrrhizin, and therefore do not cause the above side effects.
